Following the first published report of an association between a CNR1 receptor polymorphism and cannabis abuse in schizophrenia (Leroy et al., 2001), a second study of a Japanese cohort found that a polymorphism in the CNR1 gene (which encodes the CB1R receptor) may be associated with an increased risk of developing hebephrenic (i.e., disorganized) schizophrenia (Ujike et al., 2002). The gene discussed is CNR1; the disease is schizophrenia.
