Alzheimer's dementia is typified by activation of microglia and astrocytes in response to Aβ deposition, leading to a release of a variety of factors including the cytokines TNFα and IL-1β, free radicals such as nitric oxide, superoxide and cyclo-oxygenase pathway derived prostanoids (Combs et al., 2001; Hull et al., 2006; Medeiros et al., 2007).
