Enhanced antioxidant defenses may contribute to this heightened cardioprotection, as it has been reported that animals with STZ‐induced T1DM demonstrate elevations in antioxidant defenses, such as catalase, Mn‐SOD, and Glutathione S Transferase (GST) levels, which are evident as early as two weeks following STZ administration (Thompson et al. 1992; Ivanović‐Matić et al. 2010). The gene discussed is SOD2; the disease is type 1 diabetes mellitus.
