The imbalance between osteogenesis and adipogenesis is associated with pathologic conditions such as osteoporosis, which is accompanied by an increase in bone marrow adipocytes and a decrease in bone mass.3, 4 Bone and fat development are largely dependent on the key transcription factors runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), respectively.5, 6 Moreover, Runx2 and PPARγ may also control the lineage commitment and differentiation of MSCs. Here, RUNX2 is linked to osteoporosis.
