There were significantly lower red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin (Hb), and significantly higher reticulocytes, platelets and white blood cells (WBCs) in patients with thalassemia major compared with patients with thalassemia intermedia with no significant differences between patients with thalassemia major and thalassemia intermedia as regard mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) (Tables 2,3). The gene discussed is GSTM1; the disease is beta-thalassemia intermedia.
