Our discovery of a binding site for the oncoprotein c-Myc in the central locus control region of the EBV genome suggested that the molecular pathogenesis of endemic BL does not depend on a previous EBNA2-transformed state of the B cell, but mostly on a dysbalance of pro- and anti-apoptotic functions in consequence of Myc-translocation, a molecular accident in a virus-infected B cell undergoing the germinal center reaction (Niller et al., 2003). Here, MYC is linked to Burkitt lymphoma.
