CRP and cancer: In a German study documenting cancer therapy and DVT risk factors of 507 patients with cancer, factors that were predictive of an increased risk of VTE included inpatient treatment (P<0.0001), C-reactive protein (P<0.001), chemotherapy (P= 0.0080), fever (P=0.0093), prior DVT (P=0.0275), and family history of DVT (P=0.0598).15 After combining factors into one variable (number of factors) the predicted VTE risk increased with the number of factors in both outpatients (odds ratio [OR] 1.85, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.18–2.88, P=0.0071) and inpatients (OR 2.34, 95% CI 1.63–3.36, P ≤ 0.0001).
