We initially presumed that the castration effect was the result of androgen withdrawal, but when we treated intact adult rats with the AR antagonist flutamide, we found no such effect on AGD, despite confirming (via seminal vesicle weight reduction and increased circulating LH (indicative of inhibition of androgen/AR feedback in the brain) that peripheral androgen action had been considerably attenuated. This evidence concerns the gene PLOD1 and argyrophilic grain disease.
