SLC8A1 and heart failure: In a mouse model of ischemic cardiac injury induced by permanent ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery, miR-214 prevents cardiomyocyte death owing to Ca2+ overload, subsequent cardiac insufficiency and cardiac fibrosis through repression of Slc8a1 (Ncx1, sodium/calcium exchanger), which is the primary Ca2+ outflow pump in cardiomyocytes (Aurora et al., 2012).
