Despite this evidence that favors a role for autophagy in tumor suppression, some more recent findings concerning Beclin-1 contrast with the previous interpretation of data. The beclin-1 gene lies close to BRCA1 on chromosome 17q21 raising the specter that the relevance of the loss of Beclin-1 in ovarian, breast, and prostate cancer may have been overinterpreted. The gene discussed is BECN1; the disease is prostate carcinoma.
