It is worth noting that in PCa cell lines, reduction of mtDNA content leads to PCa progression, which probably through shift from androgen-dependent PCa cells to an androgen independent phenotype [35], epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition changes [36], hypermethylation of CpG islands of the putative tumor suppressor genes [37], and abnormal activation of Akt2 [38], Ras [39], ERK and JNK [36]. This evidence concerns the gene MAPK8 and posterior cortical atrophy.
