INS and type 2 diabetes mellitus: The results of the UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS), comparing the study sulfonylureas (chlorpropamide, glibenclamide, or glipizide) with insulin, showed that the intensive blood-glucose control with either sulfonylureas or insulin decreases the risk of microvascular complications, but not macrovascular disease, in patients with type 2 diabetes.
