MTOR and nephrotic syndrome: In kidney disease, although mTOR inhibitors are limited by the risk of exacerbating preexisting proteinuria [7], possibly attributable to inhibiting the vascular endothelial growth factor [8], mTOR has ameliorated the tubulointerstitial disease associated with chronic proteinuria in experimental animal models and decreased proteinuria values in patients with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome [9,10].
