Some thyroid disruptors are consumed in the diet (5, 63); for instance, plant isoflavonoids such as genistein and daidzein from soy inhibit thyroperoxidase that catalyzes iodination and thyroid hormone biosynthesis; thiocyanate from cassava not only blocks iodine uptake by thyroid and mammary glands but also interferes with thyroid peroxidase.
