A study by Wardell and co-workers [26] has indicated that non-selective inhibition of HDACs (SAHA and valproate) in multiple myeloma cells quantitatively inhibits glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1)-mediated glucose transport through downregulation of GLUT1 and inhibition of hexokinase 1, a major glycolytic enzyme. The gene discussed is SLC2A1; the disease is plasma cell myeloma.
