Interestingly, microbiome profiling, as analyzed by 16S RNA sequence analysis, revealed that in mice deficient in NLRP6, ASC, caspase-1, or IL-18, gut microbial ecology is altered with a predominant role of Prevotellaceae and Tm7 as key representative members of this microbiota-associated phenotype; these strains have also been found to be increased in IBD patients (81). The gene discussed is IL18; the disease is inflammatory bowel disease.
