Quantitative determination of mRNA expression in MSCs revealed that in ALS patients the MMP-9 expression was significantly higher than in healthy controls, suggesting that increase of MMP-9 mRNA could reflect an enhanced production of MMP-9, which trigger the transcription of collagen to compensate its reduction in protein level (Bossolasco et al. 2010). This evidence concerns the gene MMP9 and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
