The elevated levels of selected MMPs and TIMPs in CSF could be related with activation of the immune system, while higher concentrations of MT-MMP-1 and MMP-2 in CSF may be also involved in increased permeability of the BBB, thus the breakdown of the BCSFB appears in about 20–46 % of the ALS patients (Niebroj-Dobosz et al. 2010). The gene discussed is MMP1; the disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
