Taking into account the primary, proapoptotic function of Fas/FasL signalling, its possible role in IBD initially appeared to be similar to TNF/TNFR1 signalling: intestinal epithelial cells expressing Fas targeted by FasL(+) lymphocytes undergo apoptosis which may lead to the increased permeability of intestinal epithelium [157].
