A previous study of G6PD in the Dogon (and Malinke) ethnic groups in urban Mali has inferred an A-/202A frequency of 7.5% (11.0%) and 16.6% (14.9%) in severe and uncomplicated malaria cases, respectively, leading to protection against severe disease in hemizygous males but not in heterozygous females[5].
