In contrast to SOD1-ALS, protein aggregates found in other neurodegenerative diseases, including amyloid-β plaques in AD and Lewy bodies in PD, have been shown to have a high metal content (iron, copper or zinc) (Selkoe, 2001; Lotharius and Brundin, 2002; Leskovjan et al., 2009). This evidence concerns the gene SOD1 and neurodegenerative disease.
