Recently, biomarkers for endothelial injury, such as von Willebrand factor (vWF), soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), endothelial protein C and angiopoietins, are becoming promising biomarkers for severe sepsis [12]–[14], because endothelial dysfunction is widespread in company with organ dysfunction [15]. This evidence concerns the gene VWF and endothelial dysfunction.
