In response to pro-fibrotic cytokines, SOX9 becomes expressed in activated HSCs [6] where it regulates production of Collagen type 1 (COL1), the major collagen associated with the fibrotic scar [6], and Osteopontin (OPN) [7], a potential biomarker of liver disease and implicated in the progression of fibrosis [7]–[11].
