CD74 and malaria: Since induction of cell-mediated immune responses is not solely a goal of liver stage malaria vaccine development, the increased immune response induced by fusion to Ii observed in this study not only supports the progression of the hIi-ME-TRAP fusion to testing in human clinical trials of its safety, immunogenicity and efficacy, it also suggest that fusion of Ii to other recombinant antigens may be worthy of investigation for development of vectored vaccines for other diseases where cell-mediated immunity may play an important protective role.
