The human ortholog SDCCAG1 (NEMF) is implicated in colon and lung cancer (Carbonnelle et al., 1999), the Drosophila ortholog Caliban is reported to be a tumor suppressor gene and mediates protein nuclear export (Bi et al., 2005), and the budding yeast TAE2 (translation-associated element 2) is associated with the ribosome quality control complex and regulates degradation of defective translation products (Brandman et al., 2012; Defenouillère et al., 2013). The gene discussed is NEMF; the disease is lung cancer.
