Some of these inflammatory mediators (e.g., C-reactive protein [CRP], IL-6, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 [ICAM-1], vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 [VCAM-1]) have been considered as useful predictive markers of atherosclerosis [3], whereas other biomarkers (matrix metalloprotease-9 and IL-18) have been associated with plaque vulnerability [4]. Here, CRP is linked to atherosclerosis.
