We have then used this extended model to simulate a 13-week treatment with anakinra and compared the simulation results with observed clinical effects.5,6 In addition to providing a new perspective on the possible mechanisms of IL-1β–blocking action in T2DM and its potential use in β-cell regeneration, our work presents a new case in point of how a quantitative systems pharmacology approach can be used to investigate clinical questions and translate preclinical data into clinically relevant insights. This evidence concerns the gene IL1B and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
