In addition to oval cells and SP cells, several cell surface markers have been identified as cancer stem cell markers, including CD133, EpCam, CD90, CD24, etc. The isolated cancer cells using those markers all shown strong self-renewal properties and tumorigenic ability with only few cells injected in xenograph mouse model (Lee et al., 2011; Ma et al. 2007; Yamashita et al., 2009; Yang et al., 2008). This evidence concerns the gene PROM1 and cancer.
