Importantly, the phosphorylation of Hsp20 at serine 16 by PKA/G is known to induce the protective abilities of Hsp20 in a number of physiological processes associated with diseases of the heart (Edwards et al., 2012a, Fan and Kranias, 2011), however, the data presented here also describes a novel neuroprotective role for Hsp20 phosphorylation.
