Previous studies have demonstrated that delivery of vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) significantly delayed disease onset and prolonged the survival of ALS animal models [12], [13], and we have previously demonstrated that human NSCs over-expressing VEGF transplanted in spinal cord of transgenic SOD1G93A mice induced functional improvement, delayed disease onset for 7 days and extended survival of animals for 15 days [14].
