PTPN11 and hepatocellular carcinoma: The phosphatase SHP-2 has been characterized as an oncogene [46], [53], [54]; however, new studies have shown that SHP-2 may act as a tumor suppressor in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC): deletion of SHP-2 in hepatocytes led to an increase in the development of hepatocarcinoma in vivo and in vitro; in agreement with this data a subpopulation of human HCC samples showed decreased SHP-2 expression [55]–[57].
