The implication of these cells in the development of the disease has been shown in a study by Simoni et al. through transfer studies where co-transferring NK1.1− CD4− iNKT cells, mainly containing iNKT17 cells and obtained from Vα14 transgenic NOD mice, with diabetogenic BDC2.5 T cells into NOD/SCID (severe combined immunodeficiency NOD) mouse model exacerbates T1D [22]. The gene discussed is CD4; the disease is type 1 diabetes mellitus.
