Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-delta, a developmentally regulated isoform, highlights small multinucleate glial cells, particularly in the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus which colocalize with nestin in HS (Figure 4E) and may represent a specific subpopulation of glia with specific roles in this neurogenic niche 123; similar glial cell types were also noted in HS associated with dementia 24. The gene discussed is GFAP; the disease is dementia.
