Indeed, recessive mutations in the Gigaxonin-encoding gene are responsible for a devastating neurodegenerative disorder in human, called Giant Axonal Neuropathy (GAN [MIM 256850]) [1], that leads to a wide deterioration of the nervous system and provokes a massive disorganization of the Intermediate Filament (IF) cytoskeleton. The gene discussed is GAN; the disease is giant axonal neuropathy.
