Owing to their strategic location in close proximity to the site of infection, tissue-resident macrophages are upon the primary inducers of an inflammatory reaction (Soehnlein & Lindbom, 2010; Mantovani et al, 2011) and as such promote the egress of neutrophils from the circulation by secreting chemokines including CXCL1 and CXCL2.
