This conclusion is based on findings indicating that obesity is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the type 2 diabetes-like hyperglycaemia: Obese mice are insulin resistant and therefore more or less glucose intolerant, but in some strains such as C57BL/6J-ob/ob, insulin resistance is compensated by hyperinsulinemia and beta cell hyperplasia, and plasma glucose is only moderately elevated. This evidence concerns the gene INS and hyperinsulinism.
