At the molecular level, the mRNA expression of markers of cardiac hypertrophy was significantly higher in the LV from sik2+/+ mice drinking 1% saline vs. normal salt (β-MHC = A.U.: 0.53±0.05 vs. 1.23±0.26, p = 0.025; MEF2C = A.U.: 0.38±0.02 vs. 0.62±0.01, p = 0.045), but not in sik2−/− mice. This evidence concerns the gene SIK2 and cardiac hypertrophy.
