Additionally, lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP), serpin peptidase inhibitor, member 3 (SERPINA3) and orosomucoid (ORM) are known members of the malaria-induced acute inflammatory response (Fig. S9 in Text S1), while neurofilament-M (NF-M) is an intracellular protein not secreted under healthy conditions, but its increased levels may point towards increased tissue lysis.
