In spite of the presence of progressive lesions in their skin, BUD patients at Week 0 (BUD 0) and controls had equivalent mean levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and Complement Factor 3 (C3), while Fibrinogen, Plasminogen-activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1), Serum amyloid P-component (SAP), and Alpha-1 antitrypsin (A1-AT) were in fact suppressed by infection (Fig. 1 and Figure S1 in Text S1). The gene discussed is SERPINE1; the disease is infection.
