Over the past decade, different approaches to inhibit VEGF signalling have been developed, such as recombinant trap proteins (VEGF-trap; Holash et al, 2002), monoclonal antibodies (bevacizumab; Ellis, 2005; Ferrara et al, 2004) and small multi-kinase inhibitors (Wilhelm et al, 2006; Chow & Eckhardt, 2007), some of which have been approved for clinical use (Grothey & Galanis, 2009; Heath & Bicknell, 2009) in treating eye diseases as well as certain types of cancer. The gene discussed is VEGFA; the disease is cancer.
