Similar instances of aberrant splicing due to SINE insertions that are associated with canine traits have been reported: An insertion 35 bp upstream of an accepter site of the HCRTR2 (hypocretin (orexin) receptor 2) gene has been associated with canine narcolepsy in the Doberman breed [32], and an insertion nine bp upstream of an acceptor site of the SILV (a.k.a PMEL; premelanosome protein) gene has been associated with the merle pigmentation pattern in multiple dog breeds [33]. This evidence concerns the gene HCRTR2 and narcolepsy.
