SLC2A1 and cancer: In this context, the greater glucose transport of transformed cells depends primarily on the upregulation of SLC2A1 (glucose transporter 1, GLUT1), responsible for basal glucose transport in all cell types37, and, herein, we propose a mechanism to explain how cancer cells can adapt to the extra requirements of glucose: SLC2A1 overexpression mediated by the epigenetic silencing of DERL3, the gene responsible for its degradation.
