Extreme elevations of prolactin may stimulate adrenal production of DHEA-S which may reflect our finding that all overweight PCOS patients with PCOS have an increased sensitivity to androgens; androstenedione (of which >90% is produced in the ovaries), DHEAS (mainly produced in the adrenal glands) and testosterone (produced from the ovaries and adrenal glands in equal amounts) (13). The gene discussed is PRL; the disease is polycystic ovary syndrome.
