As rodents do not develop atherosclerosis spontaneously, even when nephrectomized, Buzello et al. [19] introduced the models of uni- and subtotally nephrectomized apo E knockout mice for studying atherosclerosis in CKD showing a more aggressive morphology of atherosclerotic plaques which increased in relation to renal function impairment [19].
