In addition, compared to GISTs diagnosed during 2002–2008 after the establishment of c-KIT staining as part of the diagnostic protocol and identified by a single ICD-O-3 code (8936: gastrointestinal stromal sarcoma), GISTs from 1998–2001 showed similar distributions of sex, age, and primary sites (Table 1), supporting that the majority of our cases from 1998–2001 were likely GIST. The gene discussed is KIT; the disease is gastrointestinal stromal tumor.
