While searching for ICC in organs other than the gastrointestinal musculature, including the pancreas, male and female reproductive tracts, gallbladder, blood vessels and heart, Popescu and coworkers noticed a cell population located in the interstitial stroma that was roughly similar to ICC and expressed mesenchymal/haemopoietic lineage markers such as CD34, CD117 and cKit. Here, CD34 is linked to intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.
