Studies of the methylation levels of the region 100 to 500 base-pairs upstream of the miR-34a transcription start, which includes the p53 binding site, in the prostate and pancreas carcinoma cell lines, such as LNCaP, PC-3, LAPC-4 and TsuPr1, have shown a significant correlation between the silencing of miR-34a expression and the levels of CpG methylation of the region 400 base-pairs promoter region of the miR-34a, which includes the p53 binding site [22]. The gene discussed is TP53; the disease is familial pancreatic carcinoma.
