The expression of miR-206, a skeletal muscle specific miRNA, was increased in muscle after denervation of sciatic nerve and its deficiency synergistically worsened disease progress in ALS mouse model harboring a disease causing mutation in superoxide dismutase, SOD1. In this study, the elevated expression of miR-206 after denervation promotes reinnervation process at the NMJ via regulating histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) pathway (Williams et al., 2009). The gene discussed is HDAC4; the disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
