UCP1 and Alzheimer disease: In view of our previous finding demonstrating that in the brain and in peripheral blood significant changes in thiol status are associated with increased content of both protein and lipid oxidation markers, in the present study we measured the expression levels of stress responsive proteins such as sirtuin, thioredoxin and UCP protein in the blood of AD patients as compared to age-matched normal subjects to understand the potential role of these protective mechanism in the pathogenesis of AD pathology.
