Evaluation of hENT1 in pancreatic cancer tissue acquired with minimally invasive procedures (endoscopic ultrasound–guided fine-needle aspiration or computerized tomography–guided biopsy) warrants further study to determine the potential to individualize gemcitabine therapy in the majority of pancreatic cancer patients who present with locally advanced or metastatic disease. This evidence concerns the gene SLC29A1 and metastatic neoplasm.
