In non-metastatic melanoma cells, ASC expression leads to decreased NF-κB activity and reduced tumorigenesis; however, ASC expression in metastatic melanoma cells increases NF-κB activity resulting in increased expression of pro-IL-1β, inflammasome mediated secretion of active IL-1β and enhances tumorigenesis (Liu et al., 2013).
